Oman’s expatriate visa ban has been extended for these jobs

Oman’s Ministry of Manpower has extended the ban on issuing work visas for expatriates in 87 jobs for another six months.

The decision comes as part of the government’s efforts to increase the Omanisation rate in private sectors.

This temporary ban comes as an extension to decision 487/2018 which was first issued at the end of January 2018.

However, the ministerial decision states that the ban “does not apply to establishments owned by full-time entrepreneurs which are registered as Small and Medium Enterprises and insured under the Public Authority for Social Insurance.”.

The visa ban includes jobs in accounts, IT, insurance, media, engineers, airport management, and technical jobs.

Currently, the expat workforce makes up nearly 90 per cent of total private sector employees in Oman.

The latest figures show that more than 1.7 million expats occupy jobs in the private sector against 251,000 Omanis.

In January 2019, Omani job-seekers took to social media to voice their frustration over lack of opportunities for the local workforce.
