Gala Zarzuela with Plácido Domingo

Season 2018-19 at the ROHM opens with one of the greatest opera stars of the modern era, Plácido Domingo, in a wonderfully entertaining evening of popular Spanish operetta-like musical plays called zarzuelas. Specially fashioned for the Royal Opera Muscat, Plácido Domingo’s Gala Zarzuela features the dance that everyone loves – flamenco! Fiercely proud, high-impact performers from one of the finest flamenco companies in Spain, Compañía Antonio Gades, will thrill the audience with their spectacular dramatic artistry. As the leading star in the programme, Plácido Domingo will sing romanzas as well as duets and trios with Grammy-Award-winning soprano, Ana Maria Martinez and tenor Arturo Chacón Cruz, winner of the 2005 Operalia competition. The music is played by the orchestra of the renowned Fondazione Arena di Verona under the baton of Spanish conductor, Jordi Bernàcer.

Fuego Flamenco Ballet by Antonio Gades and Carlos Saura

Where: Royal Opera House Muscat
More than a quarter of a century ago, Spain’s greatest dancer and choreographer, Antonio Gades created a fusion of ballet and flamenco that elevated Spanish dance to a status similar to that of classical ballet. Gades developed the work in collaboration with the brilliant filmmaker, Carlos Saura. Revived by the Antonio Gades Foundation in 2014 on the tenth anniversary of Gades’ death, Fuego became a smash hit on tour in Europe, Japan and Brazil. Arising out of magical Andalusian folk myths and cinematic in scope, this classically elegant, dream-like ballet enacts the tale of a beautiful gypsy girl tormented by the ghost of her husband. Fuego means fire and the performance lives up to the flaming brightness, warmth and passion evoked by its name.
Laughter Yoga Therapy Session

Kathryn Armstrong, certified Laughter yoga teacher, has a special ability to make everyone laugh.
